Michael Rapaport, zelf een groot fan, gaat in 2008 mee op tour met A Tribe Called Quest, wanneer de band in het kader van een reünie een reeks uitverkochte concerten geeft in de Verenigde Staten, tien jaar na de release van hun laatste album. Tijdens zijn reis met de bandleden (Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White) legt Rapaport vast hoe moeilijk hun onderlinge relatie is geworden en hoe hun persoonlijke verschillen en conflicten een schaduw werpen op hun creatieve samenwerking. Wanneer groeiende spanningen voor een uitbarsting zorgen tijdens een show in San Francisco, krijgen we inzicht in wat er op het spel staat voor de jeugdvrienden en collega’s en welke creatieve en persoonlijke reis ze als een band hebben afgelegd. Filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi (1964) kruipt met zijn nieuwste documentaire El Sicario, Room 164 onder de huid van de toeschouwer. Rosi tekende het schokkende relaas op van een huurmoordenaar die twintig jaar lang heeft gewerkt in opdracht van een Mexicaanse drugsbaron. Hij werkte jarenlang bij de politie in Chihuahua en werd zelfs getraind door de FBI. In kamer 164 van een morsig hotel vlakbij de Mexicaans-Amerikaanse grens vertelt de man, met een zwarte doek over zijn hoofd, onaangedaan over zijn dagelijkse werkzaamheden: kidnappen, martelen en doden. Ook de onvoorstelbare corruptie van de Mexicaanse en de Amerikaanse autoriteiten komt ter sprake. Een artikel in Harper’s Magazine van de Amerikaanse onderzoeksjournalist Charles Bowden vormde de aanleiding voor Gianfranco Rosi om El Sicario (‘de huurmoordenaar’) zelf op te zoeken. El Sicario is in 2007 gevlucht uit Ciudad Juárez, de moordhoofdstad van de wereld. Er staat inmiddels een prijs van 250.000 dollar op zijn hoofd. In zijn verbijsterende bekentenis beschrijft hij hoe hij zo’n 500 mensen heeft vermoord. Gedurende de hele film gebruikt hij een kladblok om via tekeningen en woorden zijn verhaal kracht bij te zetten. Zo laat hij in een diagram zien hoe een ontvoering tactisch in elkaar steekt, en vertelt hij hoe ze de gekidnapte met vuur hebben gemarteld. Rosi bedrijft een nieuw soort onderzoeksjournalistiek die niet alleen inhoudelijk maar ook qua vorm opvalt, pendelend tussen journalistiek en fictie, waarmee hij de grenzen van de documentaire exploreert en de documentaire boven de talking head-docu uittilt. Met minimale ingrepen weet hij de zeggingskracht van het niets verhullende verhaal van El Sicario te maximaliseren.

Is het beter de gruwelijke waarheid te erkennen of de troost van een mythe te omarmen? Negenhonderd dagen lang werd Leningrad tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog belegerd door Duitse troepen. De drie miljoen inwoners van de stad zaten als ratten in de val. In de bittere winterkou aten mensen lijm, schoenzolen, katten en soms zelfs hun medemensen. Na 900 dagen was een miljoen mensen gestorven. Dit alles vond plaats in een land waar propaganda belangrijker was dan de waarheid. De overlevenden mochten decennialang niet spreken over wat hen was overkomen, om de heroïsche mythe van het ‘land van overwinnaars’ niet te ondermijnen. En met Poetin aan de macht wordt deze mythe weer nieuw leven ingeblazen. Wat begint als een film over persoonlijke getuigenissen van het beleg van Leningrad verandert geleidelijk in een epos over hoe censuur, propaganda en angst greep krijgen op de herinneringen van de hoofdpersonen. Een worsteling die tot op de dag van vandaag voortduurt.

Een zooitje ongeregeld dat elke dienst weer, met zeer beperkte middelen, vecht tegen opgeschoten crimineeltjes, pedofiele smeerlappen en fantasten, maar ook de macho, bureaucratische pikorde bij het korps. Hun chef doet zijn best, maar ‘Narcotica’ gaat áltijd voor. Voor de gedreven agenten is het niet makkelijk om thuis hun werk bespreekbaar te maken. Fred kent dat probleem maar al te goed. Zeker wanneer hij naast al het gedoe op het bureau ook nog verliefd wordt op Melissa, een fotografe die in opdracht van het Ministerie meeloopt met het team. Rauwe, confronterende maar ook droogkomische speelfilm die in documentaire stijl is opgenomen.

Op weg naar het dorpskerkhof, trotseert een processie van vrouwen in het zwart de hitte van de zon, terwijl ze de foto’s van hun mannen, vaders of zonen dicht tegen zich aan houden. Sommigen zijn gesluierd, anderen dragen een kruis maar alle zijn ze in rouw, het gevolg van een nutteloze oorlog. Wanneer ze bij het kerkhof arriveren, splitst de stoet in twee: de ene Islamitisch, de andere Christelijk. De religiestrijd verscheurt het land, de vrouwen van het dorp verenigen zich en besluiten dat ze de mannen in hun dorp ver van deze strijd moeten houden. Radio en televisie worden gesaboteerd om de dorpelingen te isoleren van de werkelijkheid. De vrouwen zetten hun vindingrijkheid, humor, muziek en vriendschap in om de aandacht van de mannen af te leiden en hun woede en verschillen te vergeten.

In The Pirates! De documentaire laat het gevecht zien van een man die zijn eigen leven in vrijheid wil leiden omdat hij geen gevaar vormt voor zichzelf en zijn omgeving. Hij publiceerde later memoires over zijn lange verblijf in een inrichting, die uniek bronmateriaal werden voor onderzoeken van Freud en andere wetenschappers. Met deze mix van documentaire, gedramatiseerde scènes en animatie levert regisseur Pummell een opmerkelijke en fascinerende film af.

Het onherbergzame gebied dat ze moeten doorkruisen is het territorium van een agressieve roedel wolven. Opgejaagd door de bloeddorstige dieren en geteisterd door sneeuw en ijs beginnen de mannen aan de zware tocht naar veiligheid.

In Taped doen Johan (Barry Atsma) en Saar (Susan Visser) een laatste poging om hun huwelijk te redden door samen op vakantie te gaan naar Buenos Aires. De arme jongen Heathcliff wordt opgenomen in de rijke Earnshaw familie. Hier ontwikkelt hij een intense relatie met zijn jongere pleegzus. Wuthering Heights is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige romanklassieker van Emily Bronte.

In de actiekomedie 21 Jump Street zijn Schmidt (Jonah Hill) en Jenko (Channing Tatum) helemaal klaar met hun puberbestaan. Ze sluiten zich aan bij de politie en bij de geheime eenheid ‘Jump Street’ en gebruiken hun jeugdige verschijning om undercover te gaan bij een lokale middelbare school.

De 34-jarige Anders staat op het punt zijn afkickprogramma in een instelling op het platteland af te ronden. Als onderdeel van het programma mag hij afreizen naar Oslo voor een sollicitatiegesprek. Tal van verkeerde beslissingen hebben ervoor gezorgd dat de verstandige, knappe jongeman het spoor bijster is. Kabouter Plop is naar het Koninklijk paleis vertrokken om zijn plopkoeken aan te bieden aan de koning. Hij probeert zo de hofleverancier te worden. Op weg naar het paleis krijgt Plop gezelschap van Klus, die een bezoek aan het paleis voor geen goud wil missen. Aangekomen bij het paleis blijkt dat de koning er niet meer is. De kabouters wachten op de komst van de nieuwe koning, een kabouterprins. Ze zien Plop per ongeluk aan voor de troonopvolger. Voordat hij het goed en wel beseft, zit Plop op de troon als de nieuwe koning. Klus vindt het allemaal geweldig. Zeker wanneer hij samen met Kwebbel en Lui zijn intrek mag nemen in het paleis en ze bediend worden door lakeien. Maar Plop maakt zich zorgen. Want waar is de echte kabouterprins gebleven?

In 1993 Anselm Kiefer left Buchen, Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory near Barjac. From 2000 he began constructing a series of elaborate installations there. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute extends over 35 hectares and is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios that link to a network of underground tunnels dug out by Kiefer, which run underneath pavilions built to house paintings and installations. An underground pool at the cul-de-sac of a tubular iron tunnel is embedded within a crypt which backs onto to a 20 m tiered concrete amphitheatre. There are caves and woods, an open landscape of concrete towers – assembled like so many card houses – and secluded, private spaces. Traversing this landscape, the film immerses the audience in the total world and creative process of one of today’s most significant and inventive artists. Shot in cinemascope, the film constructs visual set pieces alongside observational footage to capture both the dramatic resonance of Kiefer's art and the intimate process of creation. This polarity – in terms of scale, sensibility and time – animates the film, creating a multi-layered narrative through which to navigate the complex spaces of La Ribaute. Here creation and destruction are interdependent; the film enters into direct contact with the raw materials Kiefer employs to build his paintings and sculptures - lead, concrete, ash, acid, earth, glass and gold.
