This opens up the possibility for both Georges and Marguerite of rushing into the irrational, of just following their impulses where ever they may lead, with no heed to the consequences, that eventually leads to the much-discussed surprise ending. This multi-layered story of the desire to hold off age, of self-doubt, of the sheer oddity of life, is told by a sometimes unreliable off-screen narrator, (Edouard Baer), and is filled with playful touches and great humour, with terrific cinematography by Eric Gaultier, and just-right performances from Resnais regulars Dussollier and Azéma, plus those actors new to his films, Emmanuelle Devos and Mathieu Amalric.

Famously, Rashomon – which won both the Golden Lion in Venice and the Oscar for Foreign-Language Film – introduced Western audiences to Japanese cinema in general and to the thrilling artistry of Akira Kurosawa in particular. But the film, with its ingeniously framed flashbacks, is considerably subtler and richer than most subsequent films demonstrating the relativity of 'truth'; it also succeeds as a caustic study of human weakness. Fast-paced, endlessly inventive (one of the flashbacks represents the viewpoint of a dead man!) and visually superb, this philosophical action-movie also boasts great performances from a first-rate team of Kurosawa regulars.

Roger Greenberg, single, fortyish and at a crossroads in his life, finds himself in Los Angeles, house-sitting for six weeks for his more successful/married-with-children brother. In search of a place to restart his life, Greenberg tries to reconnect with old friends including his former bandmate Ivan. But old friends aren't necessarily still best friends, and Greenberg soon finds himself spending more and more time with his brother's personal assistant Florence [Greta Gerwig], an aspiring singer and also something of a lost soul. Over the course of several days four disparate women from Iranian society are brought together against the backdrop of political and social turmoil. Fakhri, a middle aged woman trapped in a loveless marriage must contend with her feelings for an old flame who has just returned from America and walked back into her life. Zarin, a young prostitute, tries to escape the devastating realization that she can no longer see the faces of men. Munis, a politically awakened young woman, must resist the seclusion imposed on her by her religiously traditional brother, while her friend Faezeh remains oblivious to the turmoil in the streets and longs only to marry Munis’ domineering brother. Israeli war drama directed by Samuel Maoz and based on his own experiences. Depicting 24 hours in the life of four Israeli paratroopers at the outset of the 1982 Lebanon invasion, the film follows the soldiers on a mission to clear a Lebanese area of hostile fighters. Filmed almost entirely from inside the tank in which they are travelling, the film follows the men as they cope with the deteriorating state of the tank, the stress, intense heat and cramped conditions inside, the occasional failure of the communication equipment, navigational problems and the inevitable quarreling.

Co-scripted by Dario Argento and Bernardo Bertolucci, the film’s at once elegiac, ironic, subversive and supremely cinematic, and this restoration highlights the joy Leone took in sound (especially Morricone’s score) and image (Tonino Delli Colli laying out Monument Valley in ’Scope).
